REVIEW: DREAMING WHILST BLACK

Which was once a web series now reinvented on BBC, Dreaming whilst Black resurfaces for the mases. Dreaming whilst Black creator and star, Adjani Salmon, doesn’t hold back bringing his infamous web series to BBC. You’d think he would have to strip some features, messages and themes for BBC however the new series tackles the hardships and humor of dreaming as a black person in England.

I was lucky enough to watch the first three episodes at one of the premieres at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton. The audience including myself could not stop laughing and keep our eyes off the screen. The way the performances and direction commands your attention is like no other.

This six part series follows Jamaican filmmaker, Kwabena, as he tries to pursue his filmmaker passion whilst working a regular 9 to 5 job. He struggles to juggle both lifestyles and realises he has to compromise in one area to elevate in the other. Adjani does a great job conveying this as a fellow filmmaker I could relate to a lot of his struggles that many independent creatives and entrepreneurs how to experience. Sometimes Adjani would take a serious situation and make light of it. For example, there’s one scene towards the end of episode 3 where Kwabena script is plagiarized by a top director in the industry. Kwabena and his friends come together one night to orchestrate an email criticizing the fraudulent director that stole his script. Adjani tells us Kwabena makes light of bad situations to stay motivated and not let the negativity get to him. Something that many creatives experience especially being black.

Dreaming whilst Black walks the line of dreaming and living as a black dream chaser in London. It expresses the life adversities and the dream chasing struggles Kwabena has to juggle which creates memorable moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. It is often hilarious as it contains relatable scenes people experience such as deciding whether to pay for dinner or working in a majority white industry as a black woman. Despite what we go through as creative minorities, we still have to remain positive on our journey and hustle to the top. Our personality, good electric energy and vibes is unmatched and will take us to the end. In an industry built to make you fail, utilize that superpower because it’s one thing they can’t take away from you.

Dream whilst Black is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer

OPINION: is this HOW TO PITCH?

The Final Destination

I’m writing this opinion piece in light of the recent Final Destination pitch where the directors faked their death during a pitch zoom call which landed them the job.

Now let’s not get ahead of ourselves and do just that. I see this news story as needing to stand out to have a successful pitch. As outlandish and wild as this is, it did get them the job so bravo but what can we do?

Aside from including all the things to have to have a successful pitch, what makes your pitch different and above the rest? Are you confident in your project? Are you confident in speaking about your project? Are you prepared? Have you sold them on your project?

The stunt that the director pulled off was in relation to Final Destination which evolves around sudden death after cheating death. So maybe by including something about your project within your pitch may boost your chances as your pitch more became more original.

OPINION: ABOUT STORMZY NEW MUSIC VIDEO…

You’re probably expecting me to be praising the new Stormzy music video “Mel Made Me Do It”. Well let’s just say the internet made me do this.

Since Stormzy surprise dropped the video, all I’ve been hearing is “Best video to come out of the UK” etc but I respectfully disagree. “Best UK music video of the year”? Yes. Of all time? No. The video is very well produced, features many great black figures from Mega Man, Dave, JME, Headie One, Lil Simz, Usain Bolt, Ian Wright, Nella Rose and celebrities from Jonathan Ross, José Mourinho and also empowers black UK culture, however the song doesn’t connect with me the same way and I believe what was done could have been achieved in a quicker time frame.

There have been several amazing music videos to come out from the UK from 21 seconds by So Solid Crew to Black Boys by Bashy to Cry by Swiss and more. Whilst Mel Made Me Do It is a great music video, It is still very early to call it the best… Let’s give the song and video a moment to marinate to see how it holds up with time.

Stormzy really exercised his power and dominance on the UK rap throne on this song and video with several references of the fact. His confident and delivery confirms his place as number 1 in the scene. With Stormzy album about to release soon, this is a great way to come back. It’s just a slight shame that a few individuals had to jump the gun with the wild statements only after a few hours from release.

What are your thoughts?

NEWS: HBO The last of us trailer released

The long awaited trailer for HBO The Last of Us has dropped and it was well worth the wait.

Joel and Ellie

As a fan of the video game series, it was interesting to know whether the TV series adaptation would do the video game justice. As of right now we only have the trailer to go off but so far, so good. There seems to be many familiar scenes in the trailer which reminded me of the original game on PS3. Pedro Pascal who is playing Joel and Bella Ramsey playing as Ellie look as if they’re living up to the characters.

Coming 2023. Will you be watching HBO The Last of Us?

REVIEW: BBC THE CAPTURE SEASON 1 AND 2

The Capture Key Art

After viewing many tweets about The Capture early last week, I finally decided to see what the hype was about and let me tell you, it was well worth the hype.

on BBC via iPlayer and Peacock, The Capture is a mystery thriller about CCTV manipulation in attempt to arrest criminals the police don’t have enough evidence on. DCI Rachael Carey played by Holliday Grainger takes the lead in criminal investigation over the kidnapping of Hannah. CCTV footage shows character Shaun Emery kidnapping Hannah however this is the result of organisation called “Correction” who uses CCTV manipulation to expose the system being used. Rachael goes through both seasons trying to expose Correction and it’s use within the police force and criminal investigation.

I would love to tell you more but don’t want to spoil it for you as the first time you experience it won’t be forgotten. The Capture, captures you from the very beginning and doesn’t let go until the very end, yet it still grips you tight mentally craving for a third season. Despite some convenient moments for the sake of the plot, The Capture is contained with fantastic performances, bleeding edge visuals and nail biting plot twists which get bigger and bigger. It really makes you ponder the amount of surveillance used in London and debating on whether what we are seeing is reality or not , visually or verbally. It sparks a conversation if this technology is real and whether it can be implemented or not. if so, how far off are we or is it in motion now?

This is the best show on BBC right now and deserves all the praise it’s getting. Now if only there’s a way to manipulate CCTV to get a third season…
